ABOUT THE COMPANY
  Save the Children works in 120 countries. We save children’s lives. We fight for their rights. We help them fulfil their potential. Save the Children is working in Nigeria because one in five children in Nigeria dies before their fifth birthday. About 40% of children miss out on school and have to work to survive while nearly 2 million children have lost one or both parents to an AIDS-related disease.
  Save the Children has had a permanent presence in Nigeria since 2001, and is today a strong, recognized voice for children’s rights. We focus on health and nutrition, education, hunger and livelihoods, child rights governance and child protection. We work closely with partners to develop sustainable, replicable solutions to ensure that children receive decent basic necessities of life to reach their potential.
   Working with partners, Save the Children reached 8,610,607 directly and an additional 14,246,801 indirectly through multi thematic programmes in 2013. This represents 800% increase in total reach compared to 2012, with a total expenditure of USD 16,929,428; a 30% increase from 2012. Five new projects were added to the country portfolio resulting in income growth and increased geographic coverage to 16 States in Nigeria.



JOB DESCRIPTIONS
CHILD SAFEGUARDING
  1. Level 3. The responsibilities of this post may require the post holder to have regular contact with children and young people. In the overseas context all posts are considered to be level 3.
  2. As part of these responsibilities the post holder will support the establishment of child safeguarding systems, promote a culture of keeping children safe, and ensure that potential harm to children (by our own staff and/or as a result of how we do our work) is identified and addressed on an ongoing basis. The post holder should report and respond to interventions as determined by position related responsibilities identified in the Child Safeguarding Policy.
  3. ROLE To support implementation of FSL component of project. More specifically, assist in the improvement of livelihood programs. S/he is principally responsible for the implementation of Livelihood project.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
The post holder will receive a context specific ToR for each deployment, which will draw upon the responsibilities outlined below.
  1. Programme Support (typically will be at field level):
  2. Assist program officers to ensure program progress according to the developed schedule and work plan.
  3. Assist in the coordination of livelihood activities.
  4. Support in the process of beneficiary registration, community mobilization and sensitization.
  5. Assist in promoting community participation and inclusion as to encourage community ownership over activities implemented.
  6. Ensure equal representation of various community groups in the implementation of activities.
  7. Assist in the facilitation of community meetings, focus group discussion and other as required by the program.
  8. Keep program officers and management updated regards to security situation in the project implementation area.
  9. Provide weekly field reports, capturing activities progress, lessons learned as well as general situation and community updates and needs.
  10. Document lessons learned and success stories on the project.
  11. Adhere to all SC policies and procedures as outlined in SC policies and procedure manuals.
  12. Conduct himself/herself both professionally and personally in such a manner as to bring credit to SC and to not jeopardize its humanitarian mission in country of operation.
  13. To ensure that the minimum standards of humanitarian relief are maintained in accordance with the Sphere Charter and Red Cross Code of Conduct.

Capacity Building:
  1. Identify learning and training opportunities for partner staff and communicate this to the Livelihoods Officer or Livelihoods Coordinator.

Representation & Advocacy & Organisational Learning:
  1. Supporting coordination working groups within the IDP camps and host communities or target project sites.
  2. Contribute to communications and media work as required through correction of data and information and sharing with the project heads

General: Comply with Save the Children policies and practice with respect to child protection, code of conduct, health and safety, equal opportunities and other relevant policies and procedures.

REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS JOB
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE Essential
  1. Must have completed NYSC
  2. Minimum of 1 year relevant experience of working in Agricultural and livelihood programs.
  3. Education to B. Agriculture or any other related subject or equivalent field experience (in agricultural research programme) and livelihood programming.
  4. Previous experience of project management and implementation
  5. Experience of and commitment to working through systems of community participation and accountability
  6. Knowledge of monitoring and evaluation
  7. Experience of training and capacity building staff
  8. Some experience of representation and ability to represent SC effectively in external forums.
  9. Knowledge of institutional donors and experience of developing proposals
  10. Ability to write clear and well-argued assessment and project reports
  11. Excellent communication and strong influencing skills
  12. Politically and culturally sensitive with qualities of patience, tact and diplomacy
  13. A high level of written and spoken English
  14. The capacity and willingness to be extremely flexible and accommodating in difficult and sometimes insecure working circumstances.
  15. Commitment to the aims and principles of SC. In particular, a good understanding of the SC mandate and child focus and an ability to ensure this continues to underpin our support

Desirable
  1. High level of communication in a local language related to working environment
  2. Familiarity with integration of programme FSL / Nutrition / Wash
  3. Experience in gender mainstreaming, social protection programming.
